![]() ![]() Equipped in this fashion, the car originally stickered for $3,893.89 including transportation to the original selling dealer, Paul Sicolas Key Ford in Elizabeth, New Jersey. In fact, the only other options on the car are the AM/FM radio and wide oval tires. Inside the car, the story is similar: no interior decor package, no 3-spoke steering wheel, no center console, no power top, no AC. Although it has the 428 cid Cobra Jet engine, the car has a stellar under the radar spec otherwise: standard steel wheels with dog dish hubcaps, 4-speed manual transmission, competition suspension, and no hood scoop to give the game away. The alternative high performance option is the classic sleeper approach, perfectly epitomized by this car, a 1969 Q-Code Mustang Convertible built in April of 1969. In the GT500, you got a roll bar, unique front and rear end treatments, stripes, vents, and other extraverted cosmetic treatments. By this point, the Shelbys were basically cosmetic only in nature, being mechanically similar to the standard 351 Windsor (GT350) or 428 Cobra Jet (GT500) Mustangs and built in Michigan rather than at Shelby American’s Southern California facility. High-performance open Mustangs were always rare and in 1969, if you wanted serious big-block shove and a suntan simultaneously, you had two options, both powered by the same 428 cid Cobra Jet motor: either the standard Mustang Convertible or the Shelby GT500 Convertible. In 1969, there was a dizzying array of performance-oriented options ranging all the way from what was only slightly more than a trim job in the Mach 1 to the fearsome Boss 429 with its NASCAR homologation big-block motor. While huge numbers of six- and eventually four-cylinder lower trim cars have been sold, dyed in the wool performance enthusiasts have been treated to a wide variety of exciting high performance Mustangs. This is a very honest, well-loved, nicely documented classic Mustang with an extremely short owners list, excellent options, black California plates, a clear title, and Marti Report. The brilliance of the Mustang concept is that it has always bridged the gap between mass appeal and performance. It tends to leak a bit and is currently bypassed though the fan is in good working order. Since this was originally a "Heater Delete" car, the family installed a factory heater system back in the '70s. The radio is not turning on but we're going to take a look at that and if its something simple we will address. The gauges are all in working order along with the power top. It is comfortable and very nice to cruise in. The interior has had a few items replaced over the years such as carpet, seat and dash covers. Luckily, the last engines leaky disposition provided plenty of added protection to its 100% rust-free undercarriage! There are no leaks now and the undercarriage is as straight and rust-free as they come! Otherwise, be sure to see the video where I walk the lower portion of the car with a magnet. The only rust appearing on the entire car is in the lower passenger door corner. ![]() The body is in very good overall shape with some age-inevitable imperfections. ![]() The car has seen one repaint of its rare Indian Fire in the 1980s and still shines. The added Classic Magnum 500 Rally Wheels are wrapped in 215/70R 14's but are aged, hardened and will need immediate replacing. The 302ci was replaced 4,000 miles ago in 2005 with a brand new 351 Windsor Crate from Summit and runs beautifully bumping its original 230HP horsepower to 290HP with the added reliability of a new, tight motor! The shifting is tight, the braking responsive and the suspension feels good. Over the last few years it hasn't been getting used much and the family made the difficult decision of passing it along to someone that will appreciate and care for it. See the Marti Report and window sticker below. A few options have been added over the years including Rally wheels, proper center console and heat as it was common for cars ordered for Hawaii to have heater delete. It came equipped from the factory with the 302ci V8, C4 Crusie-o-Matic transmission, 2.79 axle, power steering, power front disc brakes, power top, power clock and more. This San Jose built example was repainted once in its super rare factory Indian Fire of which only 624 were finished in. It still wears the old, original black and gold California license plates, the last of which were issued at the end of 1969. This California car was purchased new in Hawaii then brought to California less than a year later. Very original 1969 Ford Mustang Convertible for sale.
